Halfway towards our 100 year vision 🌳πŸ₯³

Kia ora!

It has been 72 hours since we kicked off this initiative and we would like to write to congratulate you that you have helped us hit 50 sign ups!

Jonny & myself are excited that there are other people out there just like you who believe we can profitably regenerate NZ pine blocks to native forests within 100 years.

Why do we need 100 committed supporters?

Our back of the envelope calculations show that if we reach 100 backers we can truly look to buy our first million dollar forest within the next 6 months.

This is why we set ourselves the goal of 100 supporters in 7 days.

Right now we are 50% there and 3 days away from Friday.

What does this mean?

At 100 supporters we know we have the ability to purchase a forest and then we can take the next step of engaging many of the experts in our network who believe in this vision to help build a more in-depth financial model on our first forest.

As you have shared with us, there have been plenty of questions! Here are our top 3 so far that we hope will bring more clarity toward achieving this 100 year vision.

  1. How might Regenerate NZ generate a return?

From the conversations we have had so far with world leading green asset managers, policy analysts and leading forestry PhD lecturers it sounds like the return mechanisms could be;

1-10 year horizon

  • Focus on forest lumber as main return vehicle

10-50 year horizon

  • Mixed model revenue of timber, innovative timber products and carbon

50+ year horizon

  • Regenerative plantations and innovative land use models for the people

2. Are you trading carbon credits?

The short answer is not right now.

We understand this is a complex topic and a market that is moving quickly with lots of speculation.

As the long term vision is to transition to a regenerative forest we do not intend to initially plant into permanent "carbon sinks" like some companies are doing currently.

Forestry is complex in that if you cut down the tree you plant and have claimed credits on it, you have to buy back the credits you claimed if you cut that tree down in the future.

We are working with leading researchers, analysts and thought leaders from our network to navigate this volatile topic.

3. What is the timeline and why now?

This is important now because forestry requires long term investment cycles.

Two harvest cycles are required to get full profitability from forestry investments.

Currently in the next 5-10 years New Zealand has a significant amount of forestry assets up for sale due to the last 20-25 year harvest cycle reaching maturity.

This presents Regenerate New Zealand with a unique opportunity to become custodians and kaitiaki of these forests.

We have been blown away by the interest in this initiative so far and we encourage you to keep the suggestions and questions coming our way!

The most important thing you could do to help us hit 100 sign ups is simply tag 2 friends in this LinkedIn post before Friday to continue to spread the word.

p.s. IF we hit 100 sign ups on Friday, remote after work drinks might have to be on us!

Kia māia,

Jonny & Alex
